To raise money for the competition the El Dorado Union High School District Robotics Team is partnering with CEAR Inc. (California Electronics Asset Recovery) to have a free, drive-through, electronics waste drop-off day on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Raley’s parking lot, 166 Placerville Drive in Placerville.

For security purposes, CEAR Inc. shreds all hard drives at its secure facility. Drop-offs will be accepted up until 1 p.m. The drive can accept: monitors, televisions, desktop and notebook PCs, VCRs, stereo equipment, speakers, keyboards, mice, PDAs, digital cameras, zip drives, telephones, cell phones, printers, copiers, laser and multifunction scanners and fax machines, small household appliances such as toasters, mixers, blenders and vacuum cleaners with the dust bag removed.

The following items cannot be accepted: large household appliances (i.e. refrigerators, washers, dryers microwaves, etc.) furniture, hazardous household waste including batteries, car batteries, paint, pesticides, used oil, cleaning supplies, fluorescent light bulbs, tires, etc.

After a couple of years off, I decided to take another art class. Yeah, I know, the perpetual student. But, honestly, I love the energy of the classroom. It's challenging, and I find I push myself a lot more. I love the different perspectives of all the different teachers, and learn so much from each.

I'm taking Figure Drawing... and will be posting my work soon.

One thing I've noticed over the past few years is the obvious lack of focus or drive from the 'kids' today. They come to class unprepared, most haven't purchased the basic supplies and 'expect' to borrow from classmates. Amazing.

And disrespect for the professors. Talking while she's giving instruction, arriving late (up to an hour late!!!) and disrupting class with their smart phones.

I promise not to get on my soap-box. Much. Were the 'kids' of my generation raised so much differently? Ok, enough, don't get me started...... ;)

Even given all that, I'm enjoying the class a great deal, and each week brings something totally new. Thank you, professor Heike Schmid!!

Hi there,
I've FINALLY put together a website for my painting and bookbinding. Art has always been a passion, and this way, I have a way to show other folks.

I'll be offering basic bookbinding classes/workshops locally, now that we've moved. They are a lot of work for me to prepare, but always great fun.

Art and creativity are such a worthwhile pursuit, so enriching and stimulating. And if nothing else, a terrific way to spend some time just to yourself.

I read a good book, that pointed out CLEARLY to me why my painting isn't as good as I'd like.

I don't paint often enough.

Duh.

Malcolm Gladwell's book "Outliers" highlights several successful people in various fields and one thing the all had in common. They spent at least 10,000 hours working on their craft. Crud, I'm nowhere NEAR that.

Another thing I read today on Kevin Meizner's blog (here) was that we (artists) have a tendency to study our little fannies off. But it all comes down to finding our OWN voice. And that takes time, really dedicated time.

The weird thing for me is that I don't lack the desire to paint/draw/create, seems I have a crisis of confidence. As if I'm waiting for something...

Better do something, even if it's wrong. :D

Painting as tribute...

Of all the newsletters I get, one of my favorites is the twice-weekly letter from Robert Genn. Now, those who recognize his name are probably artists. Even if you don't paint, Robert has a wonderfully refreshing outlook on life and the human condition in general.

The newsletter I received on April 28 was titled "Painting as tribute". An interesting read, as usual, but the one thing that touched me was the video he and Peter Segnitz made, which is below.

Robert writes "No matter how seemingly banal your painting motivation might be, something else can be implicit in virtually every project. You just need to think of art-making as a form of tribute.

A tribute, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is "a thing said, done or given as a mark of respect." When you think of it, all of nature and a great deal of what mankind has done are worthy of tribute. Further, when you consider appreciation of beauty or history or even the possibility of life enhancement, our art takes on greater meaning and more power.

There's a simple way to put this idea into action. When you approach a subject or a motif, pause and contemplate. Ask yourself what a possible back-story might be."

Hi all,
I'm pretty excited. We made an offer on a house, and it was accepted. Now, comes the hard part...waiting for all the paperwork to clear, the appraisals, agreements, and agreements to the agreements. So, if we're lucky (and When the moon is in the Seventh House
And Jupiter aligns with Mars) we might just close on March 18th. Here are some images.

So, what that now means, is we have a ton of stuff to sort through, and get rid of. OMG. I've always known I have a tendency to accumulate stuff (hey, ya never know when you might need all that stuff!!) but between Sean, DH and myself, Oy VEY!! It's exhausting!! Physically, emotionally, and every other way. For me, the hardest tasks will be memorabilia (ooh, ooh, I picked up that rock in '77 on the Oregon Coast!!) the art supplies (Now, why would I want to get rid of that dried up old watercolor paint??) and of course, the books.

I love to read, and up until this past Christmas, bought a ton of books. DH bought me a Kindle for Christmas, and bless his heart, I still buy a ton of books, but they all fit on one little device!! Talk about your green solutions!! Some of the books are cheap (free) and some aren't. But it also meets another of my needs, instant gratification. If I want a book, I instantly download it, it's charged to my account, and off I go to snuggle down on the couch for the rest of the afternoon. Ah well, it IS just that easy. Almost too easy......

Since in my "other" life I'm a web designer, I'm always looking for cool techniques for web pages. In the past, finding a relatively easy way to make gold text was, well, difficult.

Writing Thank-yous

We're finally getting to our Christmas thank-yous.... Mom gave Mike one of my Dad's rings, one he wore all the time and my favorite. We just got it back from being re-sized, and it looks pretty good!!

I may just have to draw this... :D

Anyway, I did some Photoshopping to it, and got it to the right size so it would fit in the little "thank-you" card envelope, and it's all ready to go!!

After using Dreamweaver for, well, years I am taking some classes. I won a 1-month subscription to the online Lynda.com site in December and was I impressed!! I've known about that site, again for years, but always thought it was a tad bit pricey. Of coures, I was looking at the per year price, and didn't consider the month-by-month rate.

So, in January I decided to shell out the $37.50 for a one-month subscription (I know, not going to break the bank here) which includes unlimited classes for one month PLUS all the Exercise files. Yee HA!!

When I started in December, I took the Dreamweaver and Wordpress class. Awesome!! I also got the "Build your Own Wicked Wordpress Themes" from Sitepoint. So the combination are terrific.

But, I realized that there was so much to Dreamweaver I didn't know! So now I'm taking the Dreamweaver Basics class. One of my all-time pet-peeves is folks thinking they can do web pages without learning basic HTML and CSS. So, in support of this......

Hi there!
Well, I've been getting back to painting. By working smaller, I can just hammer a bunch of stuff out. Plus, being relatively new to water-soluble oils, there's a lot to experiment with.

A lot of the online art stores have had back-to-school sales, and I'm ALWAYS up for a sale, especially art supplies. I was able to get a bunch of 8 x 10 canvases cheap.

Living up in the boonies makes it difficult to practice my favorite subject matter, portraits. Anytime Sean or Mike see me coming with sketch pad and pencil, they mysteriously have very important stuff to do...somewhere else.

But, knowing a teenage boy's need for $$, Sean was willing to sit for me...for a price. Kids, sheesh!! So, below is the work I did...in 3 stages.

It's a beautiful day out, too nice to work. So, I got out the journal and worked.

We get a delightful catalog - Dr.s Foster and Smith - for everything pertaining to pets. And they have the best photos. So, I periodically go thru and cut out the ones I like and paste in my journal at random. Today happened to be on the lab puppies page. :D

Day 2 AND 3

Ok, so it took me more than one day to finish. Not sure if it counts, but oh well.

We went to see "Avatar 3-D" in the theatre, and was blown away. It was SPECTACULAR! So, when it became available on BluRay, we had to get it. On the smaller screen, it was easier to follow the story and take in the entire thing, and it was just as cool.

So of course, I had to draw Neytiri. :) My poor little journal's pages started to reject the amount of graphite. Oh well, hope you like her!

I've gone and committed to a few things.

1) Flying up to help Mom clean out the family room and have the "Mother of all Garage Sales". Should be "interesting". She even said (albeit jokingly) that she might even buy a computer with the money she makes off the garage sale. Hmm.. should I hold her to that?? :D

2) Every year the Yahoo group to which I subscribe does an "Everyday in May" drawing challenge. I did it last year, and I enjoyed it. So, here I go, once again!!

3) Since discovering I have lupus, I've been watching the national lupus site, and found they are throwing a big walk next October. So I've signed up. Actually sounds like fun... 3 mile walk around Golden Gate Park in San Francisco on October 24. My Summer Shoes

I've seen some really cool cotton tennies that folks have "Zentangled" on, and I figured I could do that!! So, I found some that were pretty inexpensive (read: "Walmart") figuring if I really messed up, it was no big loss.

But they turned out pretty good. I'll probably go back over them with black pen again just to make it a little darker, but all in all, not too bad.

Creative Suite FIVE!!?!??

Seems like I just bought Photoshop CS4. Now I'm getting hit with all the email hoopla over Adobe's next big release.

I admit it, I'm a technology geek. Every new release I GOTTA have. Especially Photoshop. I'm a little behind on Dreamweaver, just because my little HomeSite so much well fills the bill. And more.

So here I sit, pondering the eternal question. Do I REALLY NEED the next, latest and greatest release of the Creative Suite? Well, on one level (financially) I most certainly DO NOT! At a hefty $2600 for the Creative Suite 5, I think I'll pass. And just the stand-alone version of Photoshop is $699. Oy.

But it typically comes down to not whether I NEED it, but that I WANT it. 'sigh'... the spoiled three year old surfaces her feisy noggin and decrees that THIS version will be better, increase workflow, do jaw-dropping things NO ONE has ever seen before, and make her more money. (Make her thinner, improve skin elasticity, solve global warming, and bring about world peace. No, these are claims by Adobe, just my inner spoiled child trying to rationalize.)

This time around, however, I don't feel quite so compelled to jump on the bandwagon and save every penny 'till I can afford the upgrade. Not even the full version, mind you. A few reasons for this.

One. I haven't explored all the new features in Photoshop CS4 yet.
Two. I don't use Photoshop as often as I used to, down from 6+ hours a day to about 6 hours a week. I like to think I'm getting faster, but I doubt it.
Three. Why? The Photoshop I have now is MORE than enough for my work.

I've come to the conclusion that the day I outgrow Photoshop and NEED to upgrade, I'll think about it then.

Until then, I'll spend my money on painting supplies!!!!!!!!!

An Illustrator and a Painter in One: Gary Kelley's Story

I've always wanted to learn illustration. Illustrators must have a fantastic eye in order to see AND distort/caricature the human form.

A recent article in Art Bistro on Gary Kelley (read the entire article here) highlights an artist/illustrator. I love the below quote.

"Although his skills are still in demand, the artist said the landscape for illustration has changed with the ascension of computer graphics and the decline of printed books. There are simply less spaces that require illustration, and some jobs are filled by computer-aided illustration, much to a purist like Kelley’s chagrin.

“It drives me up the wall when people tell me that they have computer programs that can create the same effects as my painting,” he said. “Why would you want to do that? The end takes over and justifies the means, and I like it the other way round. I enjoy the smell of this paint; I enjoy what it feels like to scrub and wear a brush down on canvas, and if you can’t feel that, you’re never going to get it.”"

Disorder in the house warren zevon,bruce

That's kinda the status around here. Disorder in the house. I was recently diagnosed with cutaneous lupus (on the skin), I haven't felt much like doing much. The worst part was it itching and burning. Finally, it's in remission, but am still getting blood tests run to find out what's going on with my liver. What causes lupus is unknown, could be genetic, but no one knows exactly. And once you get it, you have it the rest of your life.

Plus, my dog, Travis, just went through knee surgery.
It's been 3 weeks since his surgery, and he's up and running around. And he's getting a bath today!! Yay!!

But no painting. Or art of any kind. So my weekend will be cleaning up the "disorder" in the house, and hopefully get back to what I enjoy the most, painting. Maybe I'll even have a thing or two to post!!

I've been *trying* to be good and not spent too much time just doodling around, surfing, looking at cool stuff. And, I've been pretty good.

Too Tight!!

I've been realizing that in my effort to capture a likeness I've been painting (and drawing) WAY too tight! Probably part of my colored pencil days when a painting can take up to 300 hours. But I've been working on this painting my my Grandma (see earlier post) and I'm STILL working on it. In fact, none of the paintings I started are completed. I've been fussing over the details.

So, earlier this week, a friend, Susanne, lent me 2 DVDs and a book. All on what she calls "loosey goosey" style of painting. Wow... no one uses size 1 or 0 paintbrush to achieve fine details around the eyes and mouth! No one uses a fan brush to blend skin tones! Stand back.... IT'S A REVELATION!!!!

So, I've broken out some new canvases, and am anxious to try it out. But my left brain is arguing... "Finish what you start".
'sigh'..... ok.

I'm back to painting, and I've got a few things in progress. Plus, when we traveled home to Spokane for the holidays, I took pictures of paintings I've done for my Mom. So, a few older pieces and then my WIP.

2 new portraits

Lots happened since my last post. But about the images...
the first one turned out ok and was fun to do, especially the Corvette!!

The next one didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped. Plus, you can't see the colors in the scan. I painted the dress and her gloves with "Interference" by Golden. It changes colors depending on how you hold it. So her dress changes to pink and gloves to blue. Fun stuff...

We got back from a 3 week trip to Germany a couple of weeks ago, I'll write about that in my next blog. It was a fabulous trip!! I'm ready to go back!

I seem to go in cycles. For a while, I make journals and other book structures like crazy. Then, I get enough of that and have to return to basics, drawing. Which is what I've been doing lately. I joined the Moleskine Portait group, in which you draw yourself, then send to the next person on the list. They must draw you and themselves, and send on to the next person.
So, here's the portrait I did of myself....

Anyway, here in sunny California it snowed today, plus some hail. But it didn't stick, it's just cold and wet. I had to go out for a bit, and got caught in a hail storm. Funny, seems like just yesterday it was over 100 degrees here. :D

What is it about Halloween we all love so much? Being a chocoholic, first thing that obviously comes to mind is candy. But there's so much more.

For me, it's always marked the beginning of the "holiday" season. From here out, it's a mad rush to get ready. Put up Halloween decorations, take 'em down. Put up Thanksgiving decorations, take 'em down. Put up Christmas decorations, (nag DH to put up outside lights), take 'em down.

I tried to forgo all this madness last year, focusing more on the meaning of each holiday. And it was very nice. No last minute running to the store for more whatever. No decorations. (OK, maybe a few...) And spending more happy time with family. What a huge relief!

But tradition is a funny thing. It gets into you at a very early age, and becomes almost like a drug. If you don't do a certain thing the same way, there's a weird feeling that creeps into your peripheral vision, like a ghost, whispering that something's missing.

So, as much as I grouse about the number of lights and ornaments I "have" to put on the tree, all the food that we make/eat, all the deadlines to be met, I might honor my personal traditions again this year.

But not as extreme as in past years. Just to keep those "whispers" away.

I haven't scanned any drawings in ages, and hope to get to that soon. So much to do...

Today began quite foggy.. a day for hot chocolate and fuzzy slippers. But the sun had other things in mind. By 10:00, the fog started to allow huge chunks of sun through, and by noon the sky was the most exquisite blue!! After some recent rain, everything had a fresh-scrubbed look to it, more like spring that fall. I took Travis (my chocolate Lab/Chesapeake Bay Retriever) for a walk, and it was gorgeous. He seemed to enjoy the day..bouncing around like Tigger!

Ah, but it's time for dinner... hope you had a great day!!

Is it REALLY October??

My calendar "says" it's time to get the sweaters and jeans out of storage, and to pack up the shorts and t-shirts. But it was almost 100 degrees here yesterday...

I live in Northern California, and it's been just too hot for me this summer. Seems like everyone is SO ready for Fall... just wish it'd hurry up.

Ok, enough grousing. I'm new to blogging... (sounds like something computer engineers do with a cat o' nine tails).

A little about me, though I think this all probably belongs somewhere else. I'm married to one of those computer engineers who turns out to be a real sweetie, and we have a pretty cool 14 year old boy.

I am a web designer who, because of getting "redeployed" a year ago, has struck out on her own. And I'm an artist. There's a lot of debate as to what the definition of an artist is, but I think it's for each person to decide. I think after I get a few drawings posted, you might disagree with me.
